Big Biscuit Barn
The Big Biscuit Barn has biscuits. Big biscuits. Some of the biggest I’ve ever seen. Almost saucer-size. Phyllis Cabe worked on the recipe for years to perfect it. Then she opened a restaurant. Not satisfied selling just biscuits, she made the Big Biscuit Barn a destination for breakfast and lunch. I stopped by recently around noon, so lunch was my focus.
Breakfast offers everything you can think of, from grits and eggs to a fried bologna sandwich and, of course, biscuits. Best yet, for you breakfast lovers out there, it’s served at any hour. But I’d heard about the burger. Even though the day’s lunch special, shepherd’s pie with potato soup or pinto beans, made my mouth water, I ordered the burger.
The order (for one): Big Barn Burger, fries, Barn Strawberry Shortcake.
As the name implied, the burger was large. The hand-formed patty was quite good, loaded with crisp, fresh lettuce and tomatoes.
Sometimes it’s the smallest of things that add good flavor. In this case, it was the crisp slices of kosher dill pickle. All in all, this was one burger to wrestle with. I could only eat half; the remainder went home with me.
As for the fries, they’re hand-cut and thin, just the way I like them. They came hot out of the fryer but were not cooked long enough. I like a crisp edge to my fries. These were limp. A little more time in the fryer would make these fries remarkably good.
It’s not often I splurge for dessert after a burger meal, but the shortcake is made with a cinnamon biscuit piled high with berries and whipped cream. Delicious.
